Public liability insurance explained
Public liability insurance covers claims if a customer or member of the public is injured, or their property is damaged, because of your business. It is not compulsory, but many landlords, councils and clients ask for it.
Typical claims
A customer slipping on a wet floor, or a tradesperson damaging a client’s property while working.
Choosing a limit
Contracts and leases often state a minimum limit. Check yours before choosing cover.
What it does not cover
Injuries to your own staff need employers’ liability. Faulty advice usually needs professional indemnity.
Products you sell
If you make or sell products, ask about product liability as well.
- Your trade and what you do day to day
- The limit of indemnity you choose
- Turnover and number of staff
- Your claims history
- A description of your work
- Any limit your landlord or client requires
- Your turnover estimate
