Do I need employers’ liability insurance?
If you employ anyone in the UK, you usually need employers’ liability insurance by law. It covers claims from staff who are injured or become ill because of their work.
Who counts as an employee
Part-time, temporary and seasonal staff usually count. Family members working for a limited company often count too.
When you may not need it
Some businesses are exempt, such as a company whose only employee is the owner with most of the shares. Check your own position before relying on this.
Display and keep the certificate
You must make the certificate available to staff, for example on a notice board or online.
Fines for not having it
Employers without valid cover can be fined for every day they are uninsured.
