What insurance does
a café need?
A plain-English guide for café and coffee shop owners in London and across the UK. Every business is different, so treat this as a starting point and talk to us about your own café.
Is café insurance a legal requirement?
If you employ staff, employers’ liability insurance is usually required by law in the UK. Public liability is not a legal requirement, but many landlords, councils and event organisers ask for it, and most cafés choose to have it.
What does a café policy usually include?
Common parts are public and product liability, employers’ liability, contents and kitchen equipment, stock (including spoilage), and business interruption. Glass, money and legal expenses can often be added.
What affects the cost?
Insurers usually look at your turnover, number of staff, location, the value of equipment and stock, whether you cook with hot oil, opening hours and claims history. We compare options for your situation rather than quoting a fixed price.
- 01 Have ready: your address, trading hours, number of staff, annual turnover and any past claims.
